Writing

From academic scholarship to writing for a broader audience

For much of my career, my writing has been academic and professional. I have published extensively in psychology and psychiatry and coauthored four books on chess. I am now turning increasingly toward writing for a broader audience.

My interests are wide-ranging but connected by questions that have occupied me throughout my career: What shapes who we become? How do our early experiences continue to influence us? What allows people to change? And how can education, self-understanding, and purposeful action alter the trajectory of our lives?

Current & Future Writing

Memoir

Writing and reading memoir feel like a natural extension of a career devoted to understanding the stories we tell about ourselves and how those narratives shape who we are—and who we can become. I am currently working on my own memoir, exploring how the particular experiences of an individual life can illuminate universal psychological truths about identity, belonging, adversity, and change.

Freud for the 21st Century

Freud remains one of the most influential thinkers in psychology, but his writing can be extraordinarily difficult for contemporary readers. I am interested in making his most important ideas accessible and relevant to readers in the 21st century without losing their complexity.

Evolution, Psychoanalysis & ACT

A longer-term project exploring three perspectives that deeply influence how I think about human behavior: evolutionary psychology, psychoanalysis, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Can these different traditions be brought together to help us understand why we are the way we are—and how we can change, pursue our goals, and build the lives we want?
