My career in psychology has included research, clinical practice, and teaching. My research focused primarily on depression, particularly in later life, as well as personality development. My clinical work focused primarily on personality disorders and was shaped by my psychoanalytic training at Columbia University.
I am a Professor of Psychology at Queens College, City University of New York. Teaching has been a central part of my career—from undergraduate and graduate education to mentoring students and helping people understand complex psychological ideas in accessible ways.
I write about psychology, education, chess, and increasingly, memoir. Across these subjects, I am interested in many of the same questions: how people become who they are, how we understand ourselves, and how self-understanding can open new possibilities for change.
